 In Our Daily Rhythm

We’re linking up with Kathy at Bliss Beyond Naptime, celebrating simplicity!

Temps reached 105-110 degrees today in central Texas! Summers are quiet at our school, and as the heat sets in, we try to spend the bulk of our mornings outside. A siesta and play indoors is necessary in the sweltering afternoons. When it’s hot, “painting with water” and “spray painting” are two activities sure to please the kids. It doesn’t get simpler than this…

Materials to keep handy: paint brushes–a variety of sizes would be fun, a small bucket or recycled food containers to hold water, refillable spray bottle(s), food coloring, an old white sheet or towel

“Painting with Water”

Make the great outdoors your child’s canvas! Give your little one a cup of water and a brush and let them go. There’s not much they can hurt when painting with water: concrete, the wooden fence, the back door, even windows are fun. Where does the “paint” go? Hmmm…evaporation perhaps?

“Spray Painting”

Have fun with the hose and mix up a little colored water. Make more than you think you’ll need, as your little one will go through it fast! Fill the spray bottle with colored water. Hang a colored sheet or towel on a fence, over a clothesline, or between two fixed objects. Allow your child to spray the sheet/towel, and simultaneously know that you are providing a “color experience” as they say in Waldorf education. (When you’re done, be sure to toss the sheet or towel in the laundry so it’s ready for next time.)

Simplicity…it doesn’t take much to have a whole lotta fun!
