In Tips & Treasures & Thoughts

All Hallows Eve, or Halloween if you prefer, is coming up next Monday.  Play yard conversations have focused on that all important question, “What will you be for Halloween?”  There have been reports of spiders, ninjas, pumpkins, fairies and of course favorite characters.  Given that the holiday falls on a school day this year we wanted to remind families of our policy.  We are happy to have your child wear a festive Halloween tee or don black and orange apparel but costumes, masks and accessories are not permitted.

We are celebrating at school with our Pumpkin themed activities including pumpkin baking, decorating and carving.  Today the children will enjoy a Pumpkin & Orzo Spice Soup with fresh baked bread.

The Switch Witch

When I first became a parent I was looking for a way to have a healthier Halloween for my own children.  When they were little we  began a number of traditions but my favorite tradition as they have gotten older and wanted to Trick-or-Treat has definitely been “The Switch Witch”!  Now who is this “Switch Witch” you ask? Well she is a delightful witch with a very big sweet tooth.

On All Hallows Eve she gathers candy for her stash by switching out your child’s candy with a little treasure.  My own children select a few favorite treats to save and then pour the remainder into a pillow case they leave on the porch and in the morning they discover their treasures.  The Switch Witch has left my children small gemstones, toys or books but it can really be something quite simple. I have since heard of other mythical figures such as the Pumpkin Fairy or Sugar Plum Fairy whom may be gentler figures for children to imagine but the tradition has been set in our home and my children are already talking of what gifts the “The Switch Witch” may bring!
